Making a Nerikomi Plate

Building a nerikomi block and plate has many steps. I will go through the process of making one of my plates until the bisque firing process.

Preparing the clay

Preparing the clay

Clay is wedged and prepared for color, removing air pockets and creating an even, workable body.

Mixing primary colors

Different clay colors are blended carefully to create the palette and distinctive patterns for the plate.

Layering the colored clay
Step 03

Layering the colored clay

Colored clay is layered and joined into a patterned block, building the nerikomi design through the clay itself.

Slicing the nerikomi block
Step 04

Slicing the nerikomi block

The patterned block is sliced to reveal the design, with each cross-section carrying its own variation.
